Why do you need to read? Why are refined carbs and vegetable oils banned? What should you eat instead? We’ll be talking about all of this and more... Get reading Woahhh… what’s reading got to do with eating clean? Why do I need to do it before I eat? Well, if you are serious about eating clean, you definitely have to read THE LABELS! That’s right. When you go to shop for groceries, you have to read the labels of stuff you buy. A lot of us aren’t used to doing this. I guarantee if you saw some of the ingredients in your favorite foods, you would drop them. Eating clean means you have to stay away from all preservatives, trans fats, added sugar and way too much salt. And any genius would know this means reading the label of the healthy yogurt or the baked snacks you’re buying. Why is it so important? Because even healthy sounding foods can be bad for your health.
For example, a healthy mix of nuts isn’t doing you any good if it’s fried in vegetable oil. For the best results, they need to be either raw or roasted. And of course, they have to have as little salt as possible. Remember, reading labels is about knowing each and every ingredient.
Your fat-free yogurt is bad for you if it has tons of added sugar. Even worse if it has artificial sugar substitutes. Do you read labels of foods you buy? How do you decide which food to try? Do you go by word of mouth or the packaging? Bye bye packaged foods Eating clean requires a few sacrifices. After all, no pain, no gain. This is why the packaged foods need to go. I know that sounds horrible. But trust me, it isn’t as bad as it sounds. I promise you will actually start loving your new healthy lifestyle when you get to experience the awesome results. A better body and an energetic you! Wow, all this just by saying goodbye to pre-packaged foods. They have every thing your body doesn’t need. Lots of trans fat, sodium and added sugar. Those prepackaged salad mixes and ready-to-eat noodles might save you a lot of time. But they would ultimately cost you a lot in time, energy, and money when you land yourself in the hospital. Plus, when you start making your own food, it tastes pretty good. It won’t feel like a task. Until then, you can meal prep in advance for the whole week.
Hello fruits and veggies! These might not be your first choice to eat for lunch and dinner. But if you want to live a happy and healthy life, you have to find ways to eat them. Experts say green, leafy veggies are loaded with nutrients that keep your brain young and healthy. Veggies like kale, broccoli and spinach have lots of vitamin K, folate and antioxidants to keep your brain in good health. Make sure when you’re buying veggies and fruits, you get them from the local farmer’s markets. Buy organic fresh produce to get the maximum health benefits. Here are a few suggestions to help you out.
Try to eat salad with your meals. Make them fresh using colorful veggies. Add broccoli, lettuce, bell peppers and baby corn to your salad bowl. Don’t forget to introduce more colors through carrots, swiss chard and red radishes. Mushrooms are good for protein! Love your oatmeals? How about you top them up with fruits like bananas, apples and berries. Add veggies to your everyday foods like spaghetti, noodles and pasta. Stir fried or sauteed broccoli, bell peppers and tomatoes taste good with a bowl of hot pasta. If you absolutely hate eating fruits and vegetables, your last resort is to make smoothies out of them. Refined carbs are out Highly processed foods like white bread, rice and pasta contain refined carbohydrates. And if you’re trying to eat clean, refined cabs are a big NO-NO.They increase your weight by increasing your insulin resistance. This results in health problems like fatty liver and inflammation. So what should you eat then? No pasta? No bread? No rice? Don’t fret. You can always switch refined carbs with whole grains, as they give you more fiber and nutrients. In fact, whole grains boost your gut health and reduce inflammation. This means when you are in the mood for a sandwich, make one with whole grain bread. Choose brown rice over white. It’s that simple. Added sugar? NOPE! You will need to quit added sugar. Wait… before you freak out over this, hear me out. I’m not asking you to give up sugar altogether. I did recommend you to eat fruits. And they do have sugar. You see where I’m going with this? I am asking you to skip added sugar. You will find it in foods that aren’t normally sweet. Like sauces and condiments. It’s added to make them taste good. And they sure do. But at the cost of your health. Added sugar gives you type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance and obesity. As if that’s not enough, you will also get a fatty liver and increased chances of cancer. Still loving the sugar in your ketchup?
Avoid vegetable oils and margarine You probably have a lot about the bad health effects of vegetable oils. They are extracted at high temperatures using chemicals. All of this makes them highly processed foods you shouldn’t be eating. Studies have proven vegetable oils put you at risk for heart diseases and obesity. And here comes a surprise.
Margarine is no better. It’s not a healthy choice, it’s just as bad. But what makes it a no-go for clean eating? The answer lies in the fact that it leads to the accumulation and clumping of a specific type of protein. This protein enhances toxicity and leads to memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease. Switch to eating healthier fats you get from avocados, nuts, and fatty fish.
Choose olive oil for cooking and salad dressed. Home made snacks are the best. The best road to clean eating is through eating homemade foods. Packaged snack foods like granola bars and whole-wheat crackers sound good. But they contain preservatives and added sugar/sodium. You get empty calories and no nutrition.
The same is true for eating take out foods every other day. You don’t know what they might be adding to your food. Or the portion size of each ingredient. Or the oil they’re cooking in. Especially for fried foods, where the same oil is used again and again. It might feel like a task to make your own snacks and meals. But trust me it’s a good experience.
Plus you get to be incharge of your own ingredients. Start by making simple foods like salads, soups and sandwiches. Prep your meals in advance. Drink More Water Water hydrates your body, energizes your brain, and boosts your metabolism. It doesn’t contain any trans fat, added sugar or sodium. It’s also a lot easier for you to lose weight. And if you’re bored of drinking plain water, infuse it with lemon, strawberries or pineapple to give away interesting flavors. Watch your alcohol intake I hear ya, a nice glass of wine is one of the best ways to unwind for the day and just relax. But it is also far too easy to go overboard. As much as studies would say certain alcohol like red wine is good for your health. You need to remember it’s true only when you drink a very moderate amount. If you want to stay healthy, limit your alcohol intake. Otherwise you will have a number of health problems like digestive disorders and liver disease. But clean eating is just the start.
